2 DAY PORTRAIT PAINTING MASTERCLASS
By Mark Draisey
for intermediate artists and above
in Watlington, South Oxfordshire
Saturday 6-Sunday 7 Sept. 2025
10am - 4pm
This is a course aimed at those artists with some experience in painting portraits in oils, but who are seeking help with their choice of colours, observational skills, correctly applying the paint and capturing a good likeness. You will be working from photographs supplied by me, in advance, for you to transfer to an iPad or print out on photo quality paper in readiness. As this is primarily a painting class, I will be asking each student to have preprepared their drawing on whatever surface they chose to paint on before they arrive to save time. I will be happy to provide help via email for this stage should you require it. Sorry but this course will not be suitable for beginners.
The main aims of this tutorial will be as follows:
• Learning how to look at a photograph, or live sitter, and accurately determine the true colours and tones displayed.
• Selecting the correct colours for your palette, with guidance regarding which colours to use for highlights and shadows.
• Observing the hues and tones in your reference images in order to then mix the correct colours.
• Applying the paint based on techniques adopted by the 'Old Masters' to create realistic, contoured portrayals that will add life to your work.
• We will finish with a brief talk on cleaning your brushes correctly and therefore prolonging their life.
