2 DAY OIL PORTRAIT MASTERCLASS

During this course, I will be helping you to look with fresh eyes at the colour and tonal qualities of a portrait painting in oils, in simple step-by-step proceedures and demonstrations.
• Day 1: You will be guided through the drawing phase of your portrait using photographic references, mapping out the basic structure of the face in pencil/charcoal, before commencing with the painting.
• Day 2: We will focus on finishing as much of the portrait as possible within the time schedule working on the final details. Both days will be punctuated by a lunch break (lunch not included).
The main aims of this tutorial will be as follows:
• A brief instruction on how to prepare photographic references for the optimum use as source materials.
• Selecting the correct colours for you palette, with guidance regarding which colours to use for highlights and shadows.
• Observing the hues and tones in your reference images in order to then mix the correct colours.
• Applying the paint based on techniques adopted by the 'Old Masters' to create realistic, contoured portraits that will add life to your work.
• We will finish with a brief talk on cleaning your brushes correctly and therefore prolonging their life.
The venue:
The first floor of a fine 17th Century Town Hall in the centre of historic Watlington OX49 5PY just off J.6 of the M40.
There are toilet facilities as well as a small kitchen with kettle, fridge and microwave.
Free car parking is available less than 1 minutes walk from the venue at the Hill Road Car Park OX49 5PZ.
There is a good selection of cafés and pubs serving food in the immediate vacinity.
Artists will be required to supply their own easels and materials. A comprehensive list of what to bring will be emailed to each artists booked on the course.
Photographic references can be supplied to work from, but if you wish, you may bring your own.
The 2 day course will cost £300 per person booked in advance.
A maximum of 10 only.
Should you need to cancel then a full refund will be made provided you do so before the 12th April, otherwise you could nominate someone else to fill your place. If I need to cancel at any point then full refunds will be made.
